London's pollution-tackling T-Charge in force

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has introduced the anti-pollution T Charge to London today.

The charge sees a £10 levy aimed at older cars, mainly those registered prior to 2006. A free vehicle checker to help you work out if your vehicle is subject to the new charge is available at tfl.gov.uk.

The charge will apply on top of the existing Congestion Charge, meaning affected vehicles will pay £21.50 to drive in the congestion zone.

Mr Khan commented: "It’s staggering that we live in a city where the air is so toxic that many of our children are growing up with lung problems. Londoners overwhelmingly supported my plans to introduce this £10 charge. I will continue to do everything in my power to help protect the health of Londoners and clean our filthy air."

Every year an estimated 40,000 early deaths can be attributed to air quality, in figures from the Royal Colleges of Physicians. 438 schools in London are in areas with illegal air quality levels.
