The Friarsgate development aims to create a new focal point at the heart of Lichfield town centre with new retail, residential and leisure space.
With plans for a new multi-screen cinema and gym, as well as space for up to 10 restaurants and 25 shops, as well as 82 apartments, 11 town houses and a landscaped public area, it is estimated the turnover will rise from £55 million to over £107 million by 2022. It is also expected to create 1000 new jobs.
The approval comes after recommendation for permission from local planning officers. A report compiled by the officers stated that the development corresponds with the Local Plan as well as National Planning Policy. Furthermore it adds that it is a "sustainable location" and it will have "no adverse effects on protected species and ecological habitats within or close to the site." Moreover, it will not have any detrimental impacts on highway safety, residential amenity or the character and appearance of the area.
U+I deputy CEO Richard Upton established that extensive consultation has taken place with residents, partners and local businesses in order to build support throughout the area.
The Lichfield County Council leader, Mike Wilcox confirmed that they had been working closely to U+I as well as other partners to assure the new development improves Lichfield overall and promotes growth to all parts of the city.
