The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSE NI) is investigating an accident at a recycling centre near Enniskillen in which a man was fatally injured.
The subcontractor was operating a digger at the Drummee Waste Management Facility, which is situated at an old quarry. It is believed that the ground gave way, causing the digger to fall into a gully and became partially submerged in water.
Fire and Rescue personnel reached the scene quickly and succeeded in rescuing the worker from the quarry pool, using ropes and lines. He was rushed to hospital after receiving emergency treatment from paramedics at the scene, but died soon after.
The waste and recycling facility is owned and operated by Fermanagh District Council, whose chairman Alex Baird issued a statement saying they were "devastated by this terrible accident." The council said it would work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure that a full and proper investigation into what happened is carried out.
An investigation has also been launched by the police.
