High spirits in Christmas pudding causes Health and Safety step-ups

A giant Christmas pudding has been created in Calderbridge, Lake District, weighing a whopping eight stone!

The calorific Christmas cake contains 200,000 calories, and used 24 kilograms of fruit.

The real safety issue concerned the two bottles of rum and two bottles of brandy, leading to potential fire risks when set alight.

To counter this, kitchen staff stood on stand-by with fire extinguishers for the lighting of the festive favourite.

Chunks of the cake, thought to be around 450 times larger than the average portion of pudding, have been sold with the proceeds going to charity.
