Traditionally, Christmas is a time for treating yourself and your family. But, regrettably, we are all guilty of producing too much waste from food to packaging.
Here are 10 great tips to staying environmentally friendly this Christmas whilst still enjoying the festivities.
1. Artificial trees - Although initially more expensive than a real one, artificial trees can be re-used every year making it environmentally (and economically) friendly.
2. Real Eco-friendly trees - If you opt for a real Christmas tree, make sure it is UK grown and buy from a retailer registered with the British Christmas Tree Growers Association.
3. Food gifts - Sweets, biscuits and preserves can all make great Christmas presents, especially with some creative packaging. Who doesn't love food at Christmas!
4. Leftovers - Transforming your leftovers can be a great way to create new meals, cut waste, and save money! Why not try a turkey and potato curry, or Christmas pudding trifle with your leftovers?
5. Cut food waste - Choose food which is light on packaging or loose. If you have too many leftovers, donate to a local food bank or soup kitchen.
6. Vegetarian recipes - Why not cook a meat free lunch this Christmas? According to the Soil Association, food is the single most important, everyday way for people to reduce their own environmental impact.
7. Gift wrap - Most wrapping paper is recyclable, so cut down on paper waste this Christmas by recycling your gift wrap.
8. Cut your card footprint - According to Imperial College researchers, 1.5 billion Christmas cards are thrown away each year. By sending E-cards, you are cutting your carbon footprint, saving tress, and saving money! However if you do prefer to buy cards, they are a range of Eco-friendly cards available.
9. Decorations - Environmentally friendly decorations are a great way to stay green this Christmas.
10. Getting around - Travel greener by sharing shopping trips and lifts with friends and family.
