From Autumn 2021, five electric intercity trains will be providing passenger services on route from Edinburgh to London.
The trains are currently being manufactured by Hitachi Rail at their Newton Aycliffe, County Durham site, and once in service will provide a lower carbon alternative to flying between the two capitals.
Chief Operating Officer of Rolling Stock UK at Hitachi Rail, Ross Nagle, commented: ''It is an important step as we increase our manufacturing capabilities and upskill our workforce at Newton Aycliffe, which includes an £8.5m investment in new welding and painting facilities.''
