In a move that would otherwise look like an April Fool's joke, a village in the North West of France has come up with a novel way of cutting their household organic waste . . . by feeding it to chickens! Households in the village of Pince can register their interest to receive two chickens which will consume their organic waste and also provide eggs for the table.
With a population of around 200, it is understood that up to 20 households have already expressed an interest in receiving the chickens, which will be delivered by September. Officials claim that each chicken could consume 150kg of rubbish per year.
Lydie Pasteau, Mayor of Pince, said, "To begin with it was a joke, but then we realised it was a very good idea". She added, "It will also reinforce community links: just as people look after their neighbours' cats and dogs while they're away, they'll also look after the chickens."
The Mayor hopes that the chickens will prove "a good investment as the cost of waste disposal is bound to increase over time."
