In some saddening environmental news, it is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish.
It is said that only 5% of plastics are recycled effectively, and one wagon-load of plastic is dumped into the sea every minute around the world. 40% of plastic is sent to landfill.
Dame Ellen MacArthur, record-breaking sailor, is speaking out about the amount of plastic in the water, citing that 8 million tonnes of plastic is leaked into the sea annually.
In 2014, 311 million tonnes of plastic was produced, and this number is expected to quadruple by 2050.
Cedrec's take
This is one reason why small gestures such as reusing your plastic carrier bag in the supermarkets are so helpful.
As our population grows, and our technology advances, we are producing more and more materials which are unnecessary. Zero waste to landfill is the ultimate goal, yet a staggering 40% of plastic is sent to be buried, whilst more plastic is created.
The idea of more plastic in the seas than fish is a sobering one, and leaves a very bad taste in our mouths.
