The 2014 African Agriculture Status Report has warned that vital food producers face a risk of being overwhelmed by climate change.
The five areas where the AGRA report authors wanted action were:
The report's writers call for climate-smart agriculture builds on the theory of climate resistant crops, and the studies conducted in Morocco, which explored the possibility of improving the resiliency of crops using mathematical models.
The report also warned that further changes to the climate could result in the number of malnourished people in sub-Saharan Africa increasing by 40% by 2050 - from 223 million people to 355 million people.
Cedrec's take
A worrying report which calls for immediate action. The move to stop climate change has been a slow one, and that will not be able to change any time soon, because as a society, we are far too dependant on finite resources which emit CO2. Instead, this will only add to the urgency and sense of responsibility we all have that we should take measures of our own to bring down the "carbon footprint". Hopefully, the staggering figures identified in this report, where 355 million people will suffer directly as a result of climate change, can be avoided.
