Happy birthday to the Clean Air Act 1956!
Largely recognised as one of the most significant pieces of legislation introduced in this country, the Clean Air Act 1956 was drawn up after the Great Smog, in London, 1952.
However, the Act was created in a time where air pollution was largely due to the heavy industrialisation taking place. Now, we face air pollution issues arising from newer technologies, such as diesel and increased motor traffic.
The UK Government have been the recipient of legal action from air pollution campaigners Client Earth, for neglecting to take decisive action on this serious health threat.
By 2020, Clean Air Zones are to be introduced by a host of cities, and London will introduce an Ultra Low Emission Zone.
More, however, still needs to be done. Air pollution has been found to be of high concern to residents of heavily polluted London, and according to statistics, 40,000 early deaths can be linked with air pollution.
