The proposals for an A303 road works scheme by Highways England were met with a salvo of complaints by heritage and environmental campaigners when they opened for consultation.
The controversial plans are funded by £1.6 billion and include a twin-bore tunnel of at least 2.9 Kilometers long that will run past Stonehenge, "Green Bridges", grassed canopies and converting the road into a route for walking, tying and horse riding. Highways England believe that by removing the traffic bottleneck that goes past Stonehenge, they could help improve connectivity and help open the South West - this would in turn unlock economic and social benefits for the region.
The Stonehenge Alliance, an umbrella group campaigning against the plans, say the scheme would cause "major and irreversible harm" to the World Heritage Site and "deeply scar this iconic landscape and its setting for ever".
