Assessment assesses the risk assessment

A health and safety inspector had to be rescued by firefighters this month after he fell from a ladder while he was carrying out a risk assessment. The 55-year old engineer was checking office buildings when he fell eight feet onto a flat roof. Firefighters used a hydraulic platform to rescue the man who had suspected back injuries.

Friends Provident, who were employing the inspector to investigate their buildings at Clyst St Mary, near Exeter, said the injured man was part of their maintenance team who was carrying out safety checks on the building when he fell. Spokesperson Peter Timberlake said, "He suffered cuts and bruises but otherwise was unharmed and we wish him well in his recovery. We will be carrying out a full assessment into how this happened."

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reiterated that risk assessments are an essential means of preventing accidents in the future.
