It has been revealed this month that Antrim Residents are once again the biggest waste recyclers in Northern Ireland. According to data collected for Environment Minister Arlene Foster, Antrim Borough has collectively recycled and composted 47.1% of household waste, beating the national average by 20%.
Second place fell to Banbridge District Council with 45.1%, with Belfast City Council languishing at the bottom with just 19%. Antrim Borough Council representative, and Director of Environmental Services, Anne Donaghy, was delighted that local residents still top the recycling charts for 2006/07. "The recently published Northern Ireland waste report has shown that Antrim topped the 26 councils and that recycling rates have continued to increase this year thanks to the efforts of the people in the Borough. I say a well-deserved 'well done' to the people of Antrim and our waste management team. With your continued support we aim to stay number one in the recycling table next year."
A South Antrim representative has also heaped praise on the Borough. Ulster Unionist Party MLA, David Burnside congratulated Antrim on their success adding, "This is a great achievement for the people of Antrim and it matters if we are to avoid swinging EU fines for non-compliance. It also underscores Antrim's position as one of the leading towns of Northern Ireland."
