Aerospace company under investigation

An investigation has begun into Northern Ireland's leading aerospace company after a man was killed in an incident on its site. The employee at Bombardier (Shorts), died after a road traffic accident at the company's Airport Road factory on Queen's Island in East Belfast.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSE NI) are currently investigating the accident, but have so far not released any details.

A spokeswoman for Bombardier confirmed the death of an employee with deep regret. "The company has extended its deepest sympathy to the employee's family. Bombardier is fully co-operating with the emergency services who are investigating the incident. We are unable to comment further while the cause of the incident is still being investigated."

East Belfast councillor Robin Newton described the incident as "very sad", and said that the incident and how it occurred would be a concern for Bombardier itself. "It is a very safe place to work overall and has a very good safety record as a high quality company. It is an important feature on the economy - not only in East Belfast but in all of Northern Ireland - and I am convinced they are as strict in health and safety rules as any company can be."
