Third spill in the Forth

A company blamed for an oil spill in the Firth of Forth has promised to do everything they can to prevent it from happening again. Petrochemical firm Ineos in Grangemouth was served with an enforcement order by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) following the leak which saw oil washed up over several square kilometres on the foreshore between Longannet and Valleyfield in Fife, and as far east as the Forth Bridges and South Queensferry. The firm has also launched their own investigation into what caused their flood defences to fail.

A estimated 200 cubic metres of oil escaped into the water after heavy rain at the start of July. SEPA confirmed the plant, which is the only known source of the leak, had taken action to upgrade its storm water abatement equipment. SEPA said, "Ineos has complied with the initial requirements of the enforcement notice, and further deadlines are in place to implement the interim and long-term measures." There were fears the leak could harm wildlife in what is a very special eco-system, but so far no dead birds or fish have been found. This is the third similar incident in the Forth in as many months.
