Recycling on the increase

Northern Ireland's recycling rate is rising according to a new report, and further improvements are expected as the region's councils drive forward major mechanical biological treatment (MBT) proposals. The Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) has this month published their full report on municipal waste management for 2005/06, which shows a 24.5% household recycling rate, an increase from 18.9% the previous year.

Antrim Borough Council topped the league with a 44% recycling/compost rate, with Belfast City Council recycling the least of the 26 councils, with 14.4%. Around 75.5% of the region's total municipal waste was disposed of in landfill, falling from 81.8% in 2004/05. In the same period, the total amount of municipal waste collected increased by 1.2%.

The report is a comprehensive and extended version of the summary report released in December 2006. It includes breakdowns on the type of material collected from bring banks and the kerbside, as well as league tables and rates.
