New renewable energy proposals

Secretary of State Peter Hain has revealed proposals to put the power of cleaner and greener energy into the hands of the people of Northern Ireland. A £59 million Environment and Renewable Energy Funding Package will grant assistance to private householders wanting to install renewable energy systems to heat their home. Speaking at the launch in Portaferry, Hain said "global warming is a reality that threatens our future. On top of that, everyone is feeling the impact of rising fuel prices in a world where the security of our energy supplies is under increasing threat. It is time for action".

The fund will require Northern Ireland to work at both Government and personal levels to meet the global challenge and to harness the natural resources all around us to provide heat and power and to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
