The "Essentials" approach has recently been developed by the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSE NI), to provide easily accessible guidance on controlling employee exposure to harmful substances. This approach has been embraced by industry and regulatory authorities and is widely regarded as an outstanding success. Following its initial phase which dealt mainly with chemicals, it has been further developed to include printing, asbestos and welding processes. The latter is now the subject of the latest workshop.

The HSE NI organised workshop will take place on 23 February 2007 and will look at the medical aspects of exposure to welding fumes, industrial experience within the engineering industry and will include a demonstration on how the "Essentials" approach can be used to identify the control measures best suited to particular applications.

Other future HSE NI events include the:

  • Contained Use Regulations Workshop, on 14 February 2007; and the
  • Biological Agents Unit Roadshow, on 15 February 2007.
