Plans to build Europe's largest incinerator in London have been given the go-ahead. The Department of Trade and Industry say the plant in Belvedere, South-East London will help tackle the city's serious waste problem. However, Friends of the Earth (FoE) have condemned the decision, which follows a public inquiry over concerns. Jenny Bates from FoE, said "the Government is supposed to be promoting recycling and waste prevention, but they have just produced a plant that will not only end up burning lots of material that should be recycled, but will also emit large amounts of climate-changing carbon dioxide."
This was the third application to build the "energy from waste" plant since 1990, which will burn waste from all across London and produce 72 megawatts of electricity. The Greater London Assembly, the local council and local residents have all opposed the plans.
