The Royal Mail and contracting organisation Romec have been fined for safety failures that resulted in an engineer falling 10 metres through a fragile rooflight to his death at West London Mail Centre, by Paddington Station in July 2003. The deceased was supervising a colleague who was working on a light fitting, when he approached and fell through the unprotected rooflight. They were both working without an employer present who could make sure that the systems designed to control risks in such situations were being implemented.
Both companies admitted breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Royal Mail were fined £150,000 with costs of £25,000 and Romec fined £100,000 with costs of £22,000.
