The campaign to promote renewable energy in Northern Ireland has received a significant boost with the launch of a £150 million Irish Renewable and Sustainable Energy Fund. The private sector initiative is aimed at providing funding for eco-friendly schemes over the next five years and will focus on joint ventures with the public sector in order to meet stringent EU targets. The fund is a joint proposal involving Northern Renewables and Northern Ireland Energy Holdings, and fund managers will have the opportunity to invest in a wide range of environmentally sound schemes.
David Campbell, who is the chairman of Northern Renewables, said "the potential investment in renewable energy schemes in the next five years amounts to around £500 million in Northern Ireland, and will greatly assist us in meeting our renewable energy targets."
