Flour processor accident raises safety issues

Bakery employer Honeytip Foodstuff of Bedfordshire, will be sentenced next month after pleading guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, in December 2004. This follows an accident where an employee's fingers and part of their hand were removed by the augur of a flour processing machine. The equipment in question was under repair, with a tube missing, and this allowed access to the dangerous moving part. An investigation revealed that the employee, who had a poor comprehension of English, had not been informed of the status of the machine as he cleaned it.

The company has since taken the necessary steps to prevent such an incident occurring again.
