Councillors in Limavady have expressed concerns over unauthorised dumping at the Drumaduff landfill site near Dungiven, which has been closed since 6 July 2007. The Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) has suspended Limavady Borough Council's licence for the dump after an examination of the site found it did not meet the required environmental standards. A sign at the site states that the dump is temporarily closed, but there is already evidence of illegal fly-tipping in the surrounding area.
Only two civic amenity sites are in public service in the borough, at Dungiven and Limavady Town. A further civic amenity site at Dromore has also had its licence suspended, putting further pressure on Limavady Council to bring the sites in question up to the required standards.
Liam Flanigan, Chief Executive of Limavady Borough Council, urged anyone wishing to dispose of waste to use the Council's main depot at Ballyquin Road or the civic amenity site at Dungiven. He added that, "The public are urged not to illegally dump rubbish at the site or anywhere else and are reminded that those doing so could face prosecution."
