Brown flag for Aberystwyth beach

Bathers have been warned to stay clear of an Aberystwyth beach after untreated sewage leaked into the towns harbour. A water main burst on Thursday 15 June, which flooded a car park and entered drainage gullies leading into the harbour area and the sea. Most of the waste was cleared by the afternoon, but evidence remained in the drains along with a strong smell. A spokesman for Ceredigion Council, said the "discharge could potentially affect river water quality as well as sea bathing water quality on the beaches. Notices have been put up to advise harbour/marina users of the potential hazard and members of the public are advised not to enter the sea at Aberystwyth until further notice."

In June last year, a faulty pipe between a pumping station and a waste water treatment works in the town resulted in two beaches being closed. Welsh Water has since spent £500,000 upgrading their sewage systems.
