Big waves made in green energy

An experimental new 8.5 million tidal energy product in Strangford Lough has been described as a fantastic opportunity for Northern Ireland to demonstrate their commitment to renewable and sustainable energy.

The five year, one megawatt scheme is part funded by the Department of Trade in London in order to test the potential for tidal power, and will use the tidal flow at Strangford Narrows to power twin turbines which will generate enough electricity to power 800 homes. Unlike wind power, tidal power is predictable and the turbines are estimated to be able to generate electricity for up to 18 hours a day.

The turbines will be installed in the spring and connected to the province's electricity grid in October.
