Global renewable electricity capacity to see 60% increase

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a new report which forecasts their predictions for future global renewable electricity capacity.

They believe that by the end of 2021 there will be a new record set for renewables capacity, with almost 290GW expected to be commissioned by the end of the year, and that by 2026, capacity from renewable installations will have soared by over 60%.

In terms of the types of energy sources making up this increased capacity, there is expected to be a 17% increase in solar PV capacity this year, setting a new annual record of nearly 160GW. Then by 2026, it is believed that energy coming from offshore wind capacity is set to triple.

IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol said: “The growth of renewables in India is outstanding, supporting the government’s newly announced goal of reaching 500GW of renewable power capacity by 2030 and highlighting India’s broader potential to accelerate its clean energy transition. China continues to demonstrate its clean energy strengths, with the expansion of renewables suggesting the country could well achieve a peak in its carbon dioxide emissions well before 2030.”
