National Clean Air Day

15 June marks the first ever "National Clean Air Day" in the UK. A series of events are planned to be held in several major cities across the country to raise awareness of the issues surrounding air pollution.

The events coincide with recent reports that the Government is facing legal action for the third time from environmental group, ClientEarth, who claim that the current proposed plans for tackling UK's air pollution is inadequate. Lawyers acting for the group, have successfully won two previous legal challenges, forcing the Government to improve its plans for tackling air pollution.

The latest legal challenge relates to the Government's draft Air Quality Plan document, aimed at reducing air pollution. ClientEarth's chief executive, James Thornton, claims that the Government's paper contains major flaws which could make any plans to reduce pollution levels, in the shortest time possible, unachievable. The High Court hearing could well be one of Michael Gove's first acts as the new Environment Secretary as he defends the Government's plans to address the current state of the UK's air quality.
