Safety tips for Christmas in the office

It's that time of the year when we start to debunk the myths that health and safety has banned office Christmas decorations, or you need to PAT test your festive lights.

So, for those of you that are back in the office and looking to spread a bit of Christmas cheer, here's a few tips to keep you safe!

Putting up decorations

Like most offices around the country, your decorations are probably crammed into a massive box and stuck high up at the back of a shelf.

So make sure you consider manual handling and follow safe practices at all times.

Remember, never stand on a table or chair when putting up decorations - use a step ladder and make sure:

  • you visually inspect it before use and check the steps and feet are in good condition;
  • all four step ladder feet are in contact with the ground and the steps are level;
  • employees wear suitable footwear when using a ladder;
  • employees never overreach when using a ladder;
  • three points of contact (hands and feet) are maintained with the ladder.

Always consider fire hazards when putting up decorations:

  • decorations made of light tissue paper or cardboard burn easily;
  • never attach them to lights or heaters.

If your office is an old building, and you're pinning Christmas decorations to walls or ceilings, just double check if there is potential for asbestos to be present. That's not something you want to disturb!

Decorating outdoors

If you're being extra festive and decorating outside the office too, there are a few additional measures you can take:

  • be aware of adverse weather conditions, and how they can present risks;
  • if it's wet and windy, make sure someone is holding ladders whenever they are being used;
  • use any PPE that's necessary, even if it's just a coat and gloves!

Christmas trees

Chances are you're digging the old artificial Christmas tree out of the stationery cupboard. Again. So always remember to:

  • make sure you don't block any fire escape routes or exits when you put it up;
  • not place trees near ignition or heat sources;
  • make sure your tree isn't a potential fire hazard, and carry out regular visual inspections;
  • check the lights for any damage, make sure you're using the right fuses;
  • switch to LEDs! They use less energy and don't give off as much heat;
  • turn off Christmas tree lights when everyone goes home for the night.

Extension leads

Extension leads are always a good source of accidents, especially at Christmas! Remember to:

  • always visually inspect them for damage before use;
  • never overload them and don't use block adaptors because some do not have a fuse;
  • always make sure the extension lead is not going to create a tripping hazard;
  • never join multiple extension leads together.

Whatever you decide to do, stay safe and have a great Christmas and New Year!
