Peabody, a London housing association has begun an £8 billion competition in partnership with Lendlease, the construction company to come up with plans for a development project in south-east London.
A site on the banks of the River Thames in Greenwich covering 250 hectares requires designs for a "town of tomorrow".
Peabody and Lendlease have asked for teams to be "innovative, creative, collaborative and diverse".
They have said the five key aims of the design must be:
The first part of the competition is open to teams, with five then shortlisted for the next stage in December. In March 2021 the final winner will be decided.
Executive director for the Thamesmead project at Peabody, John Lewis, has stated:
"In a post-pandemic world, the project can be a catalyst to making a step-change in how we want and need places to be.
"With the right transport interventions, Thamesmead Waterfront can drive our economic recovery; creating new jobs, homes, and businesses within a thriving and sustainable new town."
Managing director of development for Lendlease in Europe, Bek Seeley also said:
