Scotland commits to speeding up wind farm consent process

Scotland's First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has committed to speeding up the consenting process for onshore wind farms in a move that looks to provide maximum benefit to Scotland's economy.

By halving the average determination time for section 36 applications to just 12 months, the deal also shows a commitment to Scottish communities.

Further to the commitment to wind farms, the Scottish First Minister also pledged a green industrial strategy that will encourage businesses and investors to get on board with net zero. The pledge looks to highlight the job-creating opportunities of offshore wind and hydrogen facilities. The overall goal is to continue driving down emissions with "bold" action across transport, heat, and other such areas.

Speaking to MSPs, he said: "As well as the enormous economic opportunity created by climate action, there is also an overwhelming moral imperative."

"The terrifying impacts of climate change are not something to worry about in the distant future – they are here today".

The announcement came amid reports that Rishi Sunak is poised to ease an effective ban on new onshore wind farms in England to see off a rebellion by Conservative MPs.
