World Water Week highlights water’s role in climate action

World Water Week (24–28 August) brings global attention to the urgent connection between water and climate change, uniting experts, policymakers, and communities to find solutions for a more sustainable future.

Organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the annual event is held in Stockholm and online. This year’s theme, “Water for Climate Action,” emphasises how effective water management underpins resilience, adaptation, and sustainable development.

Why it matters

Water lies at the heart of climate challenges: from rising sea levels and extreme weather to food security and biodiversity loss. Without strong water governance, climate action risks falling short. World Water Week 2025 aims to showcase how water solutions can deliver real, systemic impact.

This year’s focus

The programme includes:

  • high-level panels and sessions on water resilience, climate mitigation, and adaptation;
  • youth, gender, and indigenous perspectives, ensuring diverse voices in shaping solutions;
  • global initiatives linking water to peace, energy, agriculture, and sustainable cities.

Key messages

World Water Week 2025 aims to:

  • position water as central to climate action;
  • advance equitable and inclusive water governance;
