Teesside appear to be leading the way in health and safety excellence after two companies from the region have been honoured for achieving high standards.
Hartlepool-based Gus Robinson Developments have achieved Gold standard for nine years running and are on track for a coveted RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) President's Award next year.
In addition, Hertel UK, a multidisciplinary construction and maintenance services company based in Middlesbrough, have also been recognised by RoSPA after it was awarded an Order of Distinction for achieving 15 consecutive Gold awards.
David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said both companies had shown they were committed to striving for continuous improvement. "RoSPA firmly believes organisations that demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition."
Chris Abbey, Hertel UK & Ireland’s head of health, safety, environment and quality (HSEQ), added, "We work in some extremely hazardous environments, such as oil refineries and nuclear sites, and receiving the Order of Distinction is recognition of the attention every Hertel employee plays in creating a safe working environment."
During the first half of 2013, Hertel achieved some notable safety landmarks including two million hours without a lost-time incident at five nuclear sites operated by Magnox.
Gus Robinson Developments is also celebrating its success. Michelle Boylan, health and safety co-ordinator, said, "To win the Gold Award nine years running speaks volumes about the health and safety culture within the company. Our challenge now is to continue our extremely high standards over the next year so we can attain the President’s Award, which for a company of our size would be a massive boost."
