The first phase of the North West Bicester housing development has become the very first eco-town scheme in the country to be given approval.
These homes will have a high thermal performance and will harvest rainwater. The development will also include the UK's largest residential solar array plus a direct heating system. In addition, it will contain both pedestrian and cycle routes and charging points for electrical vehicles. The houses are designed to be zero-carbon buildings and will be highly sustainable.
The development will not only deliver homes; a school will be provided to ensure no additional pressure on existing schools, and an Eco business centre and retail and business elements will also be provided.
Construction on the development, spearheaded by P3Eco and A2Dominion, will begin later this year and will consist of around 5,000 homes.
Nicole Lazarus of sustainability advisers BioRegional, said, "The Exemplar at NW Bicester is shaping up to be one of the greenest schemes ever built in the UK. We hope these beautiful new homes will show the way to a sustainable future."
