A brand new species of bird has been discovered in Cambodia's capital city - Phnom Penh. The newly named Cambodian tailorbird was first spotted in 2009 during routine checks for avian flu.
To make sure a new species of tailorbird had been found, a detailed set of tests were carried out - from the birds' plumage to their songs and their genes. These tests did indeed show that a brand new species had been found, although it is highly unusual to find undiscovered birds in an urban context.
Simon Mahood of the Wildlife Conservation Society, and co-author of the study into the bird, said, "The modern discovery of an un-described bird species within the limits of a large populous city - not to mention 30 minutes from my home - is extraordinary."
However, because of the small and shrinking nature of the birds' habitat, it is recommended that the bird is listed as "Near Threatened" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.
