Calls for global governments to raise climate targets by 2025

Mission 2025 - a coalition of some of the world's major companies and financial institutions, cities and regions are calling on global governments to enhance their climate goals before February 2025.

The coalition seek to assure global leaders that they support decisive climate action.

As the ten-year mark of the Paris Agreement approaches, countries have a February 2025 deadline to submit emission-cutting plans to the United Nations, and the Mission 2025 coalition want governments around the world to increase their climate ambition ahead of this deadline.

Mission 2025's statement is:

"We are ready to embolden government to set more ambitious plans and accelerate implementation. We know this can unlock trillions in private investment to protect our nature, scale cheap renewable energy, support industries to compete in a low carbon economy, and safeguard living standards equitably for our people".

Leading organisations of Mission 2025 include IKEA, Unilever, The B Team, C2ES, Climate Crisis Advisory Group, Climate Group, Club of Rome, E3G, ECF, WBCSD, We Are Family Foundation, and We Mean Business Coalition.

Christiana Figueres of Global Optimism, commented: "The launch of Mission 2025 today is a clear rebuttal to everyone claiming that moving faster on tackling the climate crisis is too difficult, too unpopular, or too expensive. The ambition expressed by the Mayors, investors, and businesses in this coalition should give governments the confidence to bring their 2025 climate plans in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement."
