Men's Health Week 2023

This week (12-18 June) is Men's Health Week, and this year's theme focuses on men's health and the Internet.

The iPhone was created in 2007, which means we have had 16 years of the majority of us having smartphones. Health benefits of this include being able to access our health information easily and deliver and receive health services online.

Nevertheless, having constant access to the internet has meant we can have a quick dopamine hit every time we use one of the many popular apps available in our pocket. This can become addictive and cost us time and our attention, which can then start to affect money, relationships and work.

If Internet use is starting to have an impact at work, employees should look to:

  • take a screen break from social media - put your phone in another room or set a timer where you cannot look at phone and focus on work;
  • talk to someone - discuss this with your manager or someone at work you feel comfortable with;
  • open the conversation - talk to colleagues if you feel comfortable, they may be feeling similar;
  • take notice of what is going on in your body and mind - if you are struggling, seek help with your GP or through 111.

Employers' health and safety risk assessments should consider employees' physical and mental health.

If through a risk assessment, employers identify smartphones are having a negative effect on employee mental health, they should look to:

  • create a discussion on the impacts of smartphone use and the internet on health;
  • make sure employees are aware of who are mental health first aiders, if you have them, in your company;
  • provide reasonable adjustments, where relevant, to help support employees;
  • encourage lunch/breaks to be spent away from smartphones or the internet.
