The UK’s first and largest industrial scale carbon capture and usage plant has been opened by Tata Chemicals Europe (TCE) in Northwich.
Their site manufactures pharmaceutical grade sodium bicarbonate, and this new plant will allow carbon dioxide captured from power generation emissions to be used as raw material in the manufacturing process. Captured carbon dioxide will be purified to food and pharmaceutical grade and used as a raw material.
Nearly £20 million has been invested in the plant, which also received a government grant of £4.2 million.
Martin Ashcroft, Managing Director of TCE, said: "The completion of the carbon capture and utilisation demonstration plant enables us to reduce our carbon emissions, whilst securing our supply of high purity carbon dioxide, a critical raw material, helping us to grow the export of our pharmaceutical grade products across the world."
