Eco-scores to be published on food products

In September a pilot launch will see a number of leading food brands display environmental scores on a range of their products.

Foundation Earth, a non-profit organisation, is behind the initiative that will use a traffic light system to display the eco impact of each food product from an 'A+' rating to a 'G' rating. These ratings will help to inform consumers to make more sustainable decisions on their food choices.

The products environmental impact rating will be judged using a method that assesses the products farming, processing, packaging and transport practices.

A sustainability advisory company, Mondra, developed the labelling method for the eco impact rating.

Professor Chris Elliott OBE, Chair of the Foundation's Scientific Advisory Committee, said: "The development of a more transparent, sustainable global food supply system is of huge importance to the health of our planet and the health of all citizens. We need a system based on the core principles of integrity."
