Its World Environment Day!

Today is World Environment Day, which is celebrated on 5 June every year to spread global awareness about mother nature. Each year has a different theme, and this time round it's THINK.EAT.SAVE.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die every day due to hunger. This year's theme encourages the reduction of food wastage, which will help save money and minimise the environmental impact of food production. It also encourages people to be more aware of the environmental impact of their food choices.

It is the responsibility of every one of us to help maintain the ecological balance.

Like us, we bet you're just dying to know what you can do for World Environment Day. So here are a few suggestions:

  • raise awareness - simply by talking to children, your family or colleagues at work. Spread the word about the environment;
  • make the most of your garden or yard - grow fruit and vegetables, learn about plants and seeds and start interacting with nature;
  • use public transport - why not leave the car at home and get the bus to work? Or better still, walk or cycle;
  • reduce, reuse, renew and recycle - if you're not already in the habit, today is the perfect time to start;
  • social media - if you did something good to protect the environment, tell everyone! Post pictures on Facebook and Twitter, and use Twitter hashtags to spread your message faster.
