In order to meet the 2030 target of 300,000 units, the UK must increase its current rate of electric vehicle (EV) charge point installation by 50%.
As of March 2024, Britain only had 75,074 charge points according to a new report by Cornwall Insight. This is an average of just over 1,300 charge points added per month between April 2023 to March 2024.
To reach the target, the installation rate needs to increase to 2,800 charge points per month, according to the new analysis.
Although the government has decided to delay the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030 to 2035, there has been no change for the charge point installation target.
The Rapid Charging Fund has been delayed which, in turn, has slowed the rollout of the charge points. The fund will develop ultra rapid networks at strategic locations but several instances of rescheduling meant that it was only launched in December 2023.
Cornwall Insight’s Electric Vehicle Country Attractiveness Index, which ranks European countries based on their investment appeal for EVs, currently places the UK in 9th position.
The UK trails behind countries such as the Netherlands, Norway and France, with the Netherlands holding the top spot.
