Permission given for 53 storey building in Birmingham

Birmingham Council have given permission for what would be Birmingham's tallest building, even requiring aviation lighting to warn planes.

The approval has been under consultation for seven years between the local authority and the Woodburn Group.

The £360 million Curzon Wharf project by the Woodbourne Group, which includes several buildings, will have a variety of uses and will be available for rent.

Some of the uses will include:

  • 498 rented homes in a 53 storey tower;
  • 732 student beds in a 41 storey tower;
  • 122 homes in a 14 storey block;
  • 130,000 sq ft of office space;
  • 3,000 sq ft of retail space;
  • 15,000 sq ft of leisure space;
  • 76,424 sq ft of new and improved public realm.

Plans indicate that the site will be the world's first mixed-use net zero carbon-ready development which means it should be highly energy efficient, and fully powered from renewable energy sources either on or off-site.

Paul Kitson, director of place, prosperity, and sustainability at Birmingham City Council, commented that "being home to the world's first mixed-use net zero carbon ready development is something we're immensely proud of".
