NHS Wales targetting carbon footprint of inhalers

NHS Wales is being awarded £2.4 million by the Welsh government for emission reducing projects. These projects aim at cutting carbon dioxide emissions of NHS Wales by more than a third by 2030.

One of these projects is focused upon emission reduction in the carbon footprint of inhalers that are used to treat respiratory conditions. Some inhalers contain gases that have a high global warming potential. NHS Wales is has announced it is committed to cutting the use of high global warming potential inhalers from the current 70% to less than 20% by 2025.

They are advising people who currently use inhalers to ask their prescriber to switch there regular inhaler to a low carbon alternative.

NHS Wales Chief Executive Judith Paget commented: "As the largest public sector emitter of carbon dioxide, the NHS in Wales needs to play its part to protect the health and wellbeing of future generations."

"We can all help with this effort by returning unused medication to their pharmacy, asking for a more sustainable inhaler or using active or public transport to attend appointments."
