Today is Earth Day!

Today (Tuesday 22 April) is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, which started on 22 April 1970, to mobilise over 1 billion people annually, to protect the planet.

Earthday.org are global advocates for the health of the planet, calling for the protection of our:

  • air;
  • oceans;
  • soil;
  • ecosystems;
  • wildlife; and
  • human health.

This years theme is "Our power, our planet" calling for everyone to unite around renewable energy so we can triple clean electricity by 2030.

Our power, our planet

Our planet is rapidly approaching a number of tipping points, and the solution is clear: we must expedite an equitable transition to renewable energy.

By tripling global renewable energy generation by 2030, we can transform our future, ensuring cleaner air, improved health, and a more stable climate for generations to come. Renewable energy offers an unparalleled opportunity to power the world sustainably while creating millions of new jobs, driving economic prosperity and enhancing global security, as well as improving human health and energy equity.

As fossil fuels continue to drive climate change, pollution and health crises, the shift to renewable energy is more urgent than ever. Many countries around the world are already proving that solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal energy can power entire regions, and it's time for the rest of the world to follow.

Grassroots people-power has always been at the heart of Earth Day. It is the catalyst for paradigm-shifting change because when individuals unite with a common purpose, they can overcome even the most entrenched systems and industries.

Our environmental legacy is a testament to the power of collective action, and it calls upon individuals, businesses, governments, and the private sector to join hands in safeguarding our planet.
