Holiday park owner charged with corporate manslaughter following death of park guest

The owner of Pontins holiday parks has been charged with corporate manslaughter, following the death of a guest after a section of the ceiling containing air conditioning ducting collapsed in February 2019.

A total of 18 people were injured and six taken to hospital, after a 40-metre section of structural ducting, cable and ceiling fell inside an entertainment hall, where guests were about to play bingo at the Brean Sands site in Somerset.

Among the injured in the incident was a 68-year-old Wendy Jones, who was hospitalised but died from her injuries six months later.

Following an investigation carried out by Avon and Somerset Police, Somerset Council and Crown Prosecution Service, Britannia Jinky Jersey Ltd, which is Pontins' parent company, was charged with corporate manslaughter, and the contractor Stephen Bennison was charged with an offence under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

The defendants are due to appear in court on 6 May 2025.
