Suffolk decorations re-use waste, and we'll never tyre of it

Some may recall we published a story in December 2021 about some creative folk in Suffolk who re-used and upcycled over 120 tyres that had been dumped in a fly-tipping incident, as Christmas decorations. It was a great example of how a negative action could be turned into a positive creative project and, at the same time, re-use waste.

Well, we're delighted to see that Sudbury's community wardens have been at it again and have revived their idea in order to create a series of Easter-themed decorations that are now on display at St Peter's on Market Hill in Sudbury. All of the displays are made of discarded tyres and it expected that the final display will have at least 30 figures.

Not only does the project provide an outlet for creativity, it supports the local community and, importantly, raises awareness of waste and waste crime.

It has become a real community project, with decorations being created by St Gregory's Primary School Nursery, Acton CEVC Primary, Wells Hall Primary, GB Pom Pom, Anglia Sunrise Nurseries and Achieving Aspirations, to name a few.

The Community Wardens at Sudbury Town Council told us "After the success of the Christmas tyre display it was decided to repeat it again but Easter theme it, the team are pleased with the engagement from business, schools and individuals and are looking forward to turning it into a Christmas trail all around the town start early November."

How to report fly-tipping

You can report fly-tipping or illegal waste dumping to your local council at gov.uk/report-flytipping, by entering your postcode.

If you want to report hazardous waste and large scale illegal dumping, such as lorries dumping rubbish, you can contact Crimestoppers.

You can also report other waste crimes, such as:

  • deliberately labelling waste incorrectly;
  • running a waste site without a permit, or not following the rules of a permit;
  • someone exporting waste - unless it’s to certain countries for recycling.
