World's most powerful tidal turbine launched in Scotland

A 72 metre long tidal turbine, named Orbital O2, developed by Orbital Marine Power has been launched from the port of Dundee.

Orbital O2, which its developers claim is the world's most powerful tidal turbine, has been transferred to the Orkney Islands. From here it will undergo commissioning before it is connected to the European Marine Energy Centre.

The turbine is said to be able to generate enough electricity to power 2,000 homes, and consequently offset around 2,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

Construction of the project began backed in 2019, backed by a £3.4 million grant from the Scottish Government.

Orbital's Chief Executive Officer Andrew Scott said: "The O2 is a remarkable example of British cleantech innovation and the build we have completed here is an inspiring display of what a UK supply chain can achieve if given the opportunity even under the extraordinary pressures of a pandemic."
