New retrofitting scheme in Ireland

Ireland have launched a variety of deals which may help some homeowners with current energy price rises.

The package addresses several barriers outlined by homeowners and those working in the energy industry, and helps to deliver the National Retrofit Plan.

The National Retrofit Plan identifies a range of measures aimed at driving demand for retrofit, expanding the size and capacity of the supply chain, as well as making retrofits more affordable.

Key measures included in the package are:

  • a National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme which gives increased grant levels of up to 50%, raised from the current 30%-35% grants, of the cost of a typical deep retrofit to a B2 BER standard;
  • free start-to-finish project management advice which involves access to financing for home energy upgrades;
  • those at risk from poverty get free energy upgrades from an average of 177 per month in 2021 to 400 per month);
  • a grant rate for attic and cavity wall insulation for all household, the comparable to 80% of the typical cost;
  • investment of €8 billion to 2030 in the hope to upgrade the supply chain and create new jobs while achieving a critical national objective for energy.

The funds will be supported by the ring-fenced funds from the carbon tax and be administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

The Taoiseach Micheál Martin commented at the launch of the new National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme:

"Today, the government is committing to support people in making their homes warmer and less expensive to heat, while also tackling our climate change crisis. The Irish people responded collectively, and with a sense of purpose, to the pandemic by helping protect the most vulnerable in our society. The climate crisis is just as critical for our children and future generations, as well as people at risk of fuel poverty now. This government’s commitment to reaching our climate ambitions is clear, and today is another step along that journey."
