New scheme for green home improvements

In September 2020 the Government launched the Green Homes Grant Scheme to help households insulate their homes. However the scheme reached just 10% of its target household, and is being closed on 31 March 2021, a year earlier than originally planned.

Instead these funds are being allocated to a separate fund for insulation ran by local authorities, aimed at making green improvements in lower-income households.

Households on annual incomes under £30,000 will be able to make energy efficiency improvements to their homes without having to make any financial contribution under the new scheme. Such improvements can include solar panels, heat pumps and insulation.

It is hoped such improvement will not only drive down the energy costs for these household but also cut carbon emissions.

Business and Energy Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, commented: "Upgrading the country's homes with energy-efficiency measures means we can cut emissions and save people money on their energy bills. This latest announcement takes our total energy efficiency spending to over £1.3 billion in the next financial year, giving installers the certainty they need to plan ahead, create new jobs and train the next generation of builders, plumbers and tradespeople."
