Plans for a new complex on Gateshead Quayside are set to go forward despite some opposition from residents at nearby flats.
A £260 million arena complex is set to be built on Gateshead Quayside between the Sage and the Baltic which will include a hotel and conference call centre.
The proposed development was granted planning permission last month but was in doubt after residents in the nearby flats said the complex would be "monstrously overbearing" and asked the Government to step in.
Gateshead Council confirmed that the Government had not decided to take any action to halt the development, commenting that:
"The Secretary of State has decided not to call in this application. Construction is due to begin early in 2021, giving a boost to the local supply chain and creating job opportunities at a time when the region needs it the most."
The Council believe the site could bring more visitors to the area, and more than £60 million a year to the local economy.
Ask Patrizia, the developer of the complex, have said they expect it could be open by the end of 2023.
