New water abstractions Bill for Ireland

The Water Environment (Abstractions and Associated Impoundments) Bill 2022 has been published in Ireland, which outlines a new registration, licensing and control regime for water abstractions, defined as the removal or diversion of water from the water environment.

The regulation of the new system will largely fall to the Environmental Protection Agency, with some enforcement from local authorities.

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage is proposed to regulate water abstractions not requiring a licence.
